é nach bhfuilimid fillte ar an scoil ach le líon beag de sheachtainí, tá gach rang sa scoil ag foghlaim faoin domhan mórthimpeall orainn, go háirithe an timpeallacht áitiúil.
Beidh “Lá na gCrann” ar an Déardaoin agus mar is gnách, beidh cuairt á thabhairt ag Ranganna 1 – 6 ar áiteanna éagsúla a thabharfaidh deiseanna dóibh foghlaim go gníomhach faoi chúrsaí a bhaineann le Stair, Tír Eolaíocht, Eolaíocht agus Eolas Imshaoil. Rachaidh Rang 1 go Páirc Darach, Rang 2 go Cloch Ghrianáín agus Rang 3 is 4 go Gairdíní Altamont. Ina theannta sin, tabharfaidh Rang 5 cuairt ar Choill Bhaile na Cille agus Garrán Duckett agus rachaidh Rang 6 go Mullach Rí Laighean agus Ardchroiseanna Dhíseart Diarmada.
Beidh na ranganna naionán ag faire amach do chomharthaí an fhómhair i ngairdíní na scoile agus beidh siad ag foghlaim faoi ainmnithe an fhómhair agus ag déanamh ealaíne bunaithe ar na téamaí seo.
Bhain an dá Rang 5 sár-taitneamh as turas staire áitiúla i mbaile Cheatharlach le déanaí, faoi threoir Joe Brennen agus Pat O’ Neill ó Chumann Staire agus Seandálaóichta Cheatharloch. Rinne na páistí mionshamhailteacha bunaithe ar rudaí ar fhoghlaim siad fúthu ar an turas, Caisleán Cheatharlach, Dolmain Chnoc de Brún agus túr fuaraithe na monarchan siúcra ina measc.
Ar an Luan, chuaigh roinnt páistí ó Rang 4 ar cuairt go dtí an Seomra Staire sa leabharlann áitiúil chun taighde a dhéanamh ar Gharrán Duckett mar chuid den tionscadal a bheidh ar siúl i gcomhpháirt le hEoin Colfer. Míle buíochas le foireann na leabharlainne, go háirithe John, Deirdre agus Jeanette, a chabhraigh linn an turas seo a eagrú. Beidh eolas ar Gharrán Duckett á bhailiú ag ranganna eile trí fhoinsí idirlíne agus trí scéalta a bhailiú ó phobal na háite a bhfuil baint acu leis an eastáit.
Although the new school year is only a few weeks old, each class in the school is learning about the world around us and in particular, our locality.
Thursday is “National Tree Day” and as usual, classes from Rang 1 upwards will be visiting different sites, providing opportunities for active learning in History, Geography, Science and Environmental Studies. Rang 1 will go to Oakpark, Rang 2 to Cloghgrennan, Rang 3 and Rang 4 to the gardens of Altamont, Rang 5 will visit Duckett’s Grove and Ballinakelly Wood whilst Rang 6 will visit Mullachreelan and the monastic features of Castledermot.
The infant classes will be searching for signs of autumn around the school grounds and have been learning about creatures such as the hedgehog, as well as creating artistic works on these themes.
Rang 5 enjoyed a local history trail around Carlow town recently, guided by Joe Brennan and Pat O’ Neill of Carlow Historical and Archeological Society. The children also constructed models of our built heritage, including Carlow Castle, the Browneshill Dolmen and the cooling tower of the former sugar factory.
Some of our Rang 4 visited the local history room of Carlow Library on Monday to research the Duckett’s Grove project in which we are collaborating with Eoin Colfer. Sincere thanks to members of the library staff, in particular John, Deirdre and Jeanette for facilitating our visit. Other classes will be researching internet sources and oral history from people associated with the estate.
